Best Time to Surf Sri Lanka
Unlike most surf destinations, Sri Lanka has quality waves year-round. Two separate monsoon systems drive swells to opposite coasts, meaning there is never truly an off-season — only a change of location.
South Coast Season
September – May
Indian Ocean swells wrap around the southern tip of Sri Lanka, producing reliable surf at Kabalana Beach, Marshmallows, and The Rock near Ahangama. Peak months are November through February when long-period groundswells arrive with offshore winds. Beginners thrive here — Kabalana has a forgiving sand bottom completely separated from the reef breaks.

East Coast Season
May – September
Bay of Bengal swells hit the east coast while the south is flat. Arugam Bay Main Point ranks among the top 10 surf destinations in Asia — a world-class right-hand point break producing long, mechanical rides up to 200m. Best suited for surfers who can already paddle out and catch unbroken waves.
