Arugam Bay Surf Guide

Arugam Bay is consistently ranked among the top 10 surf destinations in Asia. Its legendary Main Point produces long, mechanical right-hand rides that work from May through September — driven by Bay of Bengal swells while Sri Lanka's south coast lies flat.

Arugam Bay Main Point

Main Point is the centrepiece of Arugam Bay surf. A long sand-and-rock bottom point break that produces right-handers running from 100 to 200 metres on a good swell. The wave is forgiving enough for intermediates on the inside but has enough power and length on the outside for experienced surfers to work serious turns. June and July deliver the most consistent groundswells, while August can be excellent but more variable. The wave faces west, meaning afternoon light and clean conditions in the mornings.

Intermediate surfers who can already paddle out and catch unbroken waves will thrive here. Absolute beginners are better placed starting on the south coast at Kabalana Beach — Farsan can coach you through that progression before bringing you to Arugam Bay.

A versatile break 2km north of Main Point. More sheltered on bigger swells. Good for surfers wanting a quieter session when Main Point is crowded.

Baby Point

Beginner–Intermediate

Right-hand · mellow

Directly in front of the main beach town. Smaller and softer than Main Point. A good option for building confidence before stepping up to the main break.

Pottuvil Point

A longer, more remote point further north. Best on larger swells. Farsan can guide you here when conditions are right and Main Point is overwhelmed.
